Settlers and pioneers led very different lives. The code of conduct practiced by both groups was the same. While both groups were dependant on consumer goods, the particular goods demanded by each group were different. Rebecca Burland was born in England and immigrated to Pike County Illinois in 1831 with her family. Zenas Leonard spent 4 years trapping in the Rocky Mountain area. Both Burland and Leonard are typical examples of their respective groups. The differences in their accounts show the similarities and difference between settlers and pioneers.
