Charlotte Bronte was born in Thornton in the West Riding of Yorkshire on April 21,1816, the third child of Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell Bronte. The major event of her young life was the death of her mother in 1821, which created a lot of chaos.
Jane Eyre was published in 1847; it was a success, but was followed up by a tragedy. In September 1848, her brother Branwell died, probably due to heavy drinking; this was closely followed by the death of her sister Emily from consumption in December 1848 and her sister Anne s death of the same disease in May 1849.
Charlotte s grief is plain in her novel Shirley, which she had been working on when all the death started.
In 1824, when their mother died, Charlotte and Emily were sent to join their older sisters Maria and Elizabeth at the Clergy Daughter s School in Cowan Bridge; it made a deep and painful impression on Charlotte. She used her memories of her school days when she wrote the early chapters of Jane Eyre. The school was in Lowood, where the Reed s sent Jane after her illness. Mr. Bocklehurst is based on Charlotte s impression of Mr. Carus Wilson. Maria s death was especially traumatic for Charlotte; biographers believe that she was the inspiration for the character of Helen Burns, Jane s stoic friend at Lowood.
After her mother and sisters died, for five and a half years her and her siblings were not sent away for school, they were taught at home. They were looked after by their Aunt Miss Branwell and by a new servant Tabitha Ackroyd, a…
