The book Holes is about kids that do bad things and they get send to a detention center, Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake was once a very large lake, the largest lake in Texas. That was over a hundred years ago. Now it?s just a flat dry land. During the summer the temperature hovers around ninety-five degrees.
Stanley Yelnats was sent to Camp Green Lake when he stole shoes. Everyone in Stanley?s family blamed it on his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig- stealing- great- great-grandfather when every something went wrong.
Supposedly, Stanley had a great-great-grandfather who stole a pig from a one-legged gypsy, and she put a curse on him and the rest of his family.
Stanley?s was not the first Stanley Yelnats in his family, he was the fourth. All of them had something else in common. Besides, they?re very bad luck, but they always reminded hopeful. The first Stanley Yelnats, Stanley?s great grandfather, had made a fortune in the stock market. He lost his entire fortune when he was moving from New York to California. His stagecoach was robbed by Kissin? Kate Barlow. Kissin?Kate Barlow didn?t actually kiss Stanley?s great- grandfather. She only kissed the men she killed.
Stanley reached Camp Green Lake. They told him to dig one hole each day. Each hole must be five feet deep and five feet wide. He started digging his holes the next day. While Stanley was digging he found a gold tube with the letters KB with a heart around it on the gold tube.
One day at camp some kid named Zero ran away, and Stanley decided to go find him. He found Zero in a hole, a while away from camp. Stanley decied to tell Zero a story that his great- grandfather told him. It was about Sam the Onion Man, and how he and Mrs. Katherine Barlow became close. Mrs. Katherine Barlow decided to go to Sam because his onions cured everything, and she had a broken heart. Sam told her that onions couldn?t fix that he could, and he kissed her.
Then Stanley told Zero about the ?Big Thumb? that his great- grandfather told him about. Zero and Stanley were getting hungry, so they started digging and they found all these onions that were left from a hundred years ago from Sam the Onion Man. They ate them to keep them full. Stanley and Zero kept walking and they saw this mountain. Stanley raised his right hand slowly formed into a fist. He raised his thumb. He realized he found the Big Thumb. They started walking towards the Big Thumb, they hoped they were almost there. Stanley and Zero finally got to the mountain. They had to go back, they were really hungry and thirsty. Stanley and Zero weren?t sure how to get back. They thought they were going the right way but it ended up being the wrong way, so they had to turn around and go another way.
They finally made it back to Camp Green Lake. Stanley got to go home, and Zero, well his real names Hector got to go home with him. They were both so happy they finally got to go home without digging holes. Hector got to go home to a real home he had never been to one of them before.
