Through the Tunnel
by Doris Lessing
This story is about a young boy named Jerry who goes on vacation to a beach with his mother. One day, he sees a rock bay and wants to check it out. He goes over there and starts swimming and sees some foreign boys swimming under a rock wall. He tries to ask them how to do it but he can’t because they don’t speak his language. He then gets a pair of goggles and finally discovers the entrance. He practices holding his breath for long periods of time so he can try it. In the end he tries it and just barely makes it out without losing consciousness.
