Carolus Linnaeus was a Swedish naturalist and physician. He created the classification

system for classifying plants and animals that is now universally used. He created the

binomial system which each living thing is assigned a name that is made of two Latin

words. The first word is genus and the second is species. Linnaeus was the Father of

Systematic Botany. Linnaeus was born Carl von Linnaeus? on May 23, 1707, in Rashult.

Although his father, a curate, wanted Carl to follow in his footsteps, Carl was interested in

plants and animals. he was nicknamed ?little botanist? when he was 8 years old. The

village physician saw that Carl had unusual gifts and encouraged the father to help care for

Carl while he studied medicine at the University of uppsala beginning in 1728. He was so

intelligent that he won the job as a lecturer in botany. later the Academy of Sciences of

Uppsala sent him on a 5,000 botanical survey of lapland. What he found on the journey

was later published in a book called Flora Lapponica? in 1737. Later, his future wife, Sara

Moraea, helped provide with which he obtained his doctor?s degree in medicine at a

university in Holland. In Holland, Linnaeus became a medical attendant to and

Amsterdam banker who had a large botanical garden. Linaeus was made the director of

the garden. He later created and study the Classification system. After scientific journeys

to France and England Linnaeus returned to Stockholm to pracitce medicine. In 1742 he

was appointed chair of botany at Uppsala, where spent the rest of his life. n Linnaeus died

on January 10, 1778. Linnaeus? classification system was considered artificial. Linnaeus?s

system was supposed to be temporary. It was supposed to be replaced by a natural

system. In the 19th century the theory of evolution supplied some principles needed for a

natural system, but the broad outlines Linnaeus? system were retained.
