Pearl Harbor 3 Essay, Research Paper
Position Paper
Although the bombing of Pearl Harbor and events of World War II are far behind us and still in our minds, the United States under any and all circumstances would have gotten involved in the war eventually no matter what. Sure Pearl Harbor was the obvious reason why the United States decided to join the war, but there are some other less obvious clues that point towards our involvement no matter what the situation. The bombing of Pearl Harbor changed the minds of all Americans about our neutrality, but it is clear to see that the leaders of the United States were going to give up eventually on neutrality.
During the beginning stages of the war, the United States had become an arsenal for countries like Great Britain and France. We indirectly supplied these countries with weapons and other useful items during a time of war. President Roosevelt was dedicated to eliminating the “Epidemic of Lawlessness” which almost directly pointed towards Hitler in Germany and the same ideas in Japan. Therefore the United States was eager to help the more democracy based countries, but not in a direct way. By this, the United States had basically taken a side in the war, that of France and Great Britain, but not officially. As the rise of dictatorship overseas progressed, so did the United States help given towards Great Britain and France.
Even without the bombing of Pearl Harbor, actions overseas would have eventually driven the United States into the war. Pearl Harbor just simply sped up the amount of time until the United States would finally become involved in World War II. There is no doubt that Roosevelt would not have allowed the “Epidemic of Lawlessness” to spread so far throughout the world, possibly infecting fellow democracies.
