1St Confession Essay, Research Paper
The story ?First Confession? is a story about a troubled boy who is tormented by his sister and his grandmother and is forced to go to confession for his first time and he just refuses to go. He plots to kill his grandmother and tries to kill his sister with a butter knife and this is why he is scared to go to confession, because he is scared to be judged.
The story is told in first person perspective through the narrator, which is the boy Jackie.
The characterization in the story is very descriptive in each of the characters this makes the characters seem realistic.
The conflict in the story can be man vs. man and man vs. himself. Man vs. man conflict is because of the arguments he has with his sister about going to confession and also the way she sucks up to the grandmother. Man vs. himself is the fear he has for a bad confession that he fights with himself and is scared to give his first confession. The setting of the story is very vague in the beginning which was at his house at the end the setting took place at the confession booth.
The dialogue of the story is when the priest is speaking with Jackie about his confessions and this is how the character finally gets over his trauma. The diction of the story is modern Irish, which was the element of the way they spoke. For example the ?tis? and ?twas? was just some of the words that were spoken in the story that was not modern English. The language also added humor to the story because of the way some of the words are said and spoken in that Irish accent.
The story has it humorous selections from trying to stab his sister with a butter knife to falling out of the confession box and being picked up by his sister to put a beating on the boy. Jackie is recalling and unpleasant childhood that he had from all of his responses to the way he thinks. For example all of the Jackie?s exaggerations centers the story?s humor. All of the descriptions are mixed with childhood emotions that affect the humor in the story and make it interesting and funny.
The theme of the story is that of his childhood memories. This theme is being afraid in being judge by God and having a bad confession. The ?fear of damnation? was what he was afraid for and was the reason he did not want to go to confession. Throughout the story the narrator is fighting with his sister, which is the central theme in the story.
In conclusion the story?s setting and the diction sets the story?s tone. This story really brought the reader to the same level as the narrator was. Which was used as a good characterization of Jackie and the comedy of the paragraph. The moral is things aren?t always as bad as it seems this describes the confession that the boy had and how he did not want to tell in his confessions.
