Go Ask Alice!
Alice is fifteen, white, middle, class. She diets, she dates. She loves Roger but the most time he doesn t notice her. If she would ever sleep with a boy she would sleep with him. Alice hates her look. She wants to be pretty and slim. Lately she loses fascination about all things. School is boring and she doesn t even go to parties.
Her parents want to move. Her Dad is invited to become the Dean of the Political Science at – . Alice is happy and is not hard for her to leave the old school. But she misses her old house and her grandparents who she calls gramp and gran. Alice has a brother called Tim and a sister Alexandria. The two are younger than Alice. At her new school it is horrible for her. Nobody speaks to her the first days. but her brother and sister like the new school. Finally she finds a friend at school. Her name is Gerda, but Alice s mother and father don t like her. Alice doesn t feel happy in her family. She hates his sister and her brother more than she loves them. Tim is intolerable and her mother is constantly Peking at her. Alice gets to know Beth Baum. Beth is Jewish and her father is a doctor. Her mother nags a lot. Alice s parents like Beth, because she is pretty nice. In the holidays Beth goes on a summer camp for six weeks and Alice stays at her grans.
One day she meets Jill Peters and she invites her for a party. Alice doesn t like taking drugs. She wants to stop it and to go home, but her grandpa has a little heart – attack and Alice has to help her grandma. Alice cant tell her parents why she wants to leave her grans so she has to stay. In the holidays she sees Roger. She feels strange after she has slept with Bill. Alice takes pills to feel better. She feels horrible and tired. She is afraid of being pregnant but than her period starts.
Beth comes home from camp, but she is hardly the same the same person and she met some Jewish jerks, that she s going with.
Alice feels lonely but Roger writes her some letters. Alice gets to know Chris
Chris takes drugs too and she works in a shop where are the flippiest clothes are sold. Chris has a boyfriend named Ted and Alice gets to know Richie. Alice and Chris want to move to San Francisco and to look for jobs. Alice loves her family and she wants to leave them, because she doesn t want to know them which person she is. At first its pretty horrible in San Francisco. Their (flat) stiffing little one room apartment is clammy and damp. They cant find good jobs. But finally Alice takes a job in some crappy little lingerie store. Chris takes a job in the boutique from Sheila. Sheila is very attractive and the owner of the shop. Alice gets more homesick every day, but she is afraid of telling Chris. She quiets her job and gets a job at Mr. Maria Mellani who is very fat and jolly man. Alice adores her job and Mellani is like second family
father for her. Alice gets to know Mr. Mellanis family and for the first time she feels happy in San Francisco. Sheila has parties nearly every night and Chris and Alice are always invited. At first Alice and Chris enjoy the parties, which are really fun but then.
December the 3rd.
…Chris and Alice decide to leave this screwed up some. The two girls find their new home close to Berkeley. They work hard to make the apartment looking great. Kids often visit Chris and Alice and tell their problems, but the two girls have enough problems with their lives.
Alice phones her parents and her family is happy to hear from her. Chris and Alice fly home and both are fetched by their parents. Alice likes living at home and Christmas time. After holidays its shock at school. Chris and Alice see each other often at school but not even one other child wants to have contact to Alice. Everyone knows that Alice was a pusher and so they often attack her, Lane is a boy who takes drugs and he hunts Alice the worst way. But in February Lane gets hit. Alice can t stand it at home and so she leaves home again. She hitch – hikers to Denver and there she shares a place with a couple of kids. For a few nights she sleeps in a park, but one day she goes to a nice church where she gets help. They give her to chance to take a shower and she gets clean clothes. She is allowed to take acid there. They want her to stay for a few day and then to contact her parents. But they don t allow her to take acid Alice gets to know Doris who gets good friend for her.
Doris is 14 years old and she has been taken Drugs since she was 10 years old. Her current stepfather started heaving sex with her. One time, when he hunts her so bad, that her gym – teacher recognised. She got a new family where her older brothers raped her. Alice lives in the street for some time, but then she comes home again.
Everything gets better. She gets to know and love Joel. But one day Alice becomes clean and she gets to know and love Joel. But one day Alice gets very ill. She has to go to the State Mental Hospital. She thinks that worms and maggots are crawling on her body, but there are only hallucinations. After a few weeks she becomes OK and she is allowed to go home. Now she is happy and she wants to live a happy life with Joel, her family and Fawn.
Three weeks later she dies. Her parents find her lying on the floor in the kitchen.
