A NATIONAL TREASURE: JIMMY CARTER
Jimmy Carter was president from January of 1977 to January of 1980. During his presidency, however, he did not accomplish nearly as much as he has in the past 18 years.
In 1984, Carter joined the Habitat for Humanity Organization, a nonprofit organization that helps build homes for the needy in the United States and in other countries. This began when the former President led a group of workers to New York City to help restore a six-story building and make it into affordable housing for nineteen families. President Carter has served on the board of directors for the Habitat for Humanity Organization.
At Emory University, located in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1982, Jimmy Carter became a University Distinguished Professor. During this time, he, along with help from his wife, created the Carter Center. The Center is non-partisan and nonprofit. The Center s staff join with Carter in an attempt to resolve national and international conflict, promote democracy outside the United States, preserve human rights throughout the world, and stop disease and other misfortune.
In 1991, President Carter and the Center started the Atlanta Project, or TAP, a community-wide venture to attack the social problems assorted with poverty, suck as teenage pregnancy, kids dropping out of school, juvenile delinquency, crime and violence, homelessness, and unemployment. TAP is a nonprofit, non-governmental project that is supported by foundations, corporations, and individuals, and is run solely by the people of Atlanta.
With the great advances in the welfare of the public and humanity, Jimmy Carter is considered not only to have been one of the greater presidents, but also one of our nation s greatest reformers. He is easily able to be considered our nation s greatest treasure.
