Comparing and Contrasting GNOME and KDE

Desktop environments help give Linux a more attractive and customizable look. Linux has a few different choices for desktop environments to help enhance the users experience. Two of the most popular are GNOME, which stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment, and KDE, which stands for Kool Desktop Environment. Both of them have good qualities to help put them on top.

Both GNOME and KDE enhance the look of Linux without sacrificing its performance at all. They are both free which means you have the right to use the software, to redistribute the software, to alter the software, and distribute your altered version. With both of these the source code, data files, and images are included to alter it anyway you want. At this point GNOME has an office application suite and KDE is in the process of developing one. KDE and GNOME both come with a good amount of network tools, games, system tools, and other utilities. One drawback of GNOME is that it does not come with a standard window manager while KDE does, but there are free “GNOME-aware” window managers like Enlightenment and Window Maker. KDE is a better choice for use in an office environment due to its personal time tracker, KOrganizer, and address book applications.

Both KDE and GNOME hove their benefits and their drawbacks. A good thing about Linux is that you can install both and let the user decide which he is most comfortable with.
