Honest Iago In William Shakespeare’s Othello, despicable Iago, the ultimate villain, uses his intelligence and resourcefulness to exact his vengeance. By creating chaos and causing people to doubt each other Iago rises to power. In the deaths he causes as he achieves his revenge, he provides a shocking representation of absolute evil and a metaphor a out human nature.Iago’s extreme villainy, originally fueled by his jealousy of Cassio’s position, bloomed into a much greater passion. His first deeds were fairly harmless. Iago was being merely mischeivious when he told Brabantio about Othello and Desdemona’s secret relationship. His scheme later became so grand that even he got carried away with the plans to get revenge. Iago dug himself a whole so deep that the only way to go on would be to keep digging. He took any and all circumstances and molded them into his scheme, and his purpose became to harm each person that he came in contact with, whether they had done him harm or not.
In addition, Iago’s incredible skill of deception allowed him to adapt every situation to his plans to wear away at Othello. He took advantage of Cassio’s closeness to Desdemona by convincing Othello that they were having an affair. When Cassio approached Desdemona to help him regain the trust of Othello, Iago suggested her disloyalty. Iago planted a seed that soon worked away at Othello’s insecurities and blossomed into an idea that to Othello’s murder of Desdemona and his suicide.
