Этот интересный немецкий проект был образован в 1991 году. Вначале там было всего несколько человек, которые исполняли вполне традиционный дэт. Однако со временем команда разрослась до 16-17 единиц, туда набралось куча нетрадиционных для этого жанра инструментов, и в результате получился некий металлический оркестр. Поначалу музыканты держали на своих шведских коллег, специализировавшихся на мелодичном металле и развлекались тем, что разогревали такие команды, как "Deicide", "Biohazard", "Agressor", "Anathema" и "Pyogenesis". Свою первую демку "Haggard" записали в 1993 году. На следующий год на свои кровные денежки музыканты издали мини-альбом "Progressive" и попытались донести его в массы, разогревая "Amorphis" и "Desultory".
Начиная с 1995-го коллектив ударился в прогрессив, и стал добавлять все больше и больше классических элементов в свою музыку. Именно тогда в "Haggard" появились скрипачи, виолончелисты, пианисты и женское сопрано.
Результаты такого поворота событий были запечатлены на промо-ленте "Once… Upon A December's Dawn". Этот релиз музыканты раскручивали на гастролях в компании с датской командой "Illdisposed" и немецкой "Disgust". Реакция публики была эйфорической и 16 человек, из которых состоял коллектив решили работать дальше в этом направлении. Подписавшись к лейблу "Serenade Records", они выпустили свой дебютный альбом "And Thou Shalt Trust ...The Seer". Это творение представляло из себя смесь средневековый музыки, классики и фолка, сдобренную тяжелым, но мелодичным дэтом. Выглядело это как путешествие во времени в мечтательно-расслабленном состоянии и чем-то напоминало творчество "Therion". Уже тогда "Haggard" смешали английские и немецкие тексты с древней латынью.
Основой же этого концептуального альбома послужили труды незабвенного Мишеля Де Нотр Дама, более известного под кличкой Нострадамус. На гастролях, последовавших за выходом пластинки группа поддерживала "Rage", а на следующий год открывала концерты "Atrocity".
В течение этого времени коллектив посетил Австрию, Швейцарию и Нидерланды, не забыв прокатиться по своей родной Германии. Однако вскоре "Haggard" приобрели статус хедлайнеров и уже в сентябре 1998-го их самих разогревали "Solefald" и "Tristania". Спустя еще пару лет группа сподобилась на выпуск второго лонгплея под названием "Awaking the Centuries". Альбом оказался не только покороче своего предшественника, но и маленько похуже. В значительной мере этому способствовали всякие разговорные вставки на религиозную тематику. Не обращая особого внимания на снижение музыкального потенциала, музыканты отправились на гастроли в поддержку этой пластинки.
Европой здесь уже не обошлось и "металлический оркестр" зарулил аж в Мексику. В августе 2001 года в присутствии приличного количества слушателей в мексиканской столице состоялось выступление "Haggard", на основе которого и был записан первый концертник "Awaking The Gods".
