"Типичные представители периода "британского вторжения Fortunes" как и многие другие коллективы того времени начинали с модного тогда мерси-бита. Предтечью этой группы явилось бирмингемское вокальное трио "The Cliftons", куда вошли Род Аллен (р. 31 марта 1944, Лейстер), Глен Дэйл и Барри Притчард (р. 3 апреля 1944). С появлением "Beatles" ребята быстренько ухватили новое веяние, сменили музыкальные ориентиры и добавили в состав клавишника Дэвида Карра и ударника Энди Брауна (р. 7 января 1946). Тем временем обнаружилось, что в Штатах уже существует банда с подобным названием, и вывеску быстренько сменили на "The fortunes".
В сентябре 1963-го появился их первый сингл "Summertime, Summertime", но особого успеха этот релиз не имел. Второй сингл, "Caroline", вышедший на "Decca", получил прописку в радиоэфире, но, несмотря на это в чарты не попал. Подобная судьба постигла и две следующие сорокапятки.
Лишь в 1965 году "Fortunes" удалось прорваться в британские хит-парады (причем сразу на второе место) с песней Гринвэя и Кука "You've Got Your Troubles". В Штатах ее успех был чуть-чуть поскромнее – седьмое место. Следующая композиция, "Here It Comes Again", почти что повторила достижения своей предшественницы. Одновременно с этим синглом появился и дебютный альбом "Fortunes", одной из новых песен которого была "Voice Your Chaika", посвященная Валентине Терешковой. В марте 1966-го состоялось первое американское турне группы, компанию в котором ей составили "Moody blues". Приуроченный к этому событию сингл "This Golden Ring" занял в американских чартах всего лишь 82-ю строчку, а следующая сорокапятка снова провалилась.
Недовольный таким положением дел летом 1966-го отчалил Глен Дэйл, решивший поискать удачи в сольной карьере. На его месте оказался гитарист из Шотландии Шел Макрэ (р. 8 марта 1945, Бербанк). Команда продолжала исполнять свои мелодичные песенки, но со второй половины 60-х начался подъем психоделии, и "Fortunes" стали терять свою аудиторию.
После пары неудачных синглов ансамбль потерял свой контракт с "Decca", угодив в лапы "United Artists". Пластинки продолжали выходить, но в коммерческом плане толку от них было мало, и группе приходилось зарабатывать на жизнь рекламными джинглами. Одним из таких опусов стала известная тема "It's The Real Thing" из рекламы "Кока-колы". Летом 1968-го Карр решил завязать с музыкальным бизнесом и "Fortunes" остались вчетвером.
