Начало этому альт-металлическому проекту из Луисвилля (что в штате Кентукки) было положено в 1996 году, когда вокалист Крис Волз откликнулся на объявление в местной газете, поданное гитаристом Джейсоном Даунтом. Этим двоим ребятам потребовалось некоторое время, чтобы отработать совместную деятельность в ходе постоянных репетиций. Даунт сомневался в выборе между альтернативой и индастриалом, но Волза индастриал не очень прикалывал, и он склонил своего коллегу к ню-металлу. В 1997-м состав "Flaw" (изначальное название – "F. Law") увеличился до трио. Басиста Райана Джерса, за месяц до этого покинувшего ряды морских пехотинцев, парни увели из другой местной банды.
Буквально через неделю после его прихода парни приступили к записи своего первого инди-альбома. Интересно, что сессии прошли почти-что на халяву. Музыканты заказали себе по каталогу нужное оборудование, а через месяц вернули его, сказав, что оно их не устраивает, благо политика продающей фирмы позволяла сделать такой финт.
Впрочем, эта мера для ребят была вынужденная, поскольку никто из них не имел определенного источника дохода. Альбом получился интересным, и пару композиций с него запустила в эфир местная радиостанция. Росту популярности "Flaw" также поспособствовали совместные концерты с " Fear factory" и "Econoline Crush". Вслед за этим "Flaw" выпустили самостоятельно еще пару дисков: одноименный альбом в 1998 году и EP "Drama" – в 2000-м. К тому времени состав группы был окончательно укомплектован.
Новыми членами коллектива стали ударник Крис Баллинджер и второй гитарист Лэнс Арни. С приходом Лэрни звучание команды стало немножко атмосферным и чуть "космическим". Этому способствовал также тот факт, что оба гитариста использовали семиструнные инструменты, а Джерс практиковал пятиструнку.
В 2000 году "Flaw" с успехом выступили в легендарном нью-йоркском клубе "CBGB", где их и приметили представители "Republic". Получив контракт от мажоров, музыканты отправились в лос-анжелесскую студию "Sound City", где и приступили к записи своего первого "настоящего" альбома. Руководил сессиями Дэвид Боттрилл, который продюсировал ранее Питера Гэйбриэла и " Tool". "Through the eyes" получился достаточно эмоциональным, с пульсирующими гитарными риффами и мелодическими структурами. Хотя особой агрессивности на альбоме не наблюдалось, музыка была тяжелой, мрачной и несколько мистической.
Очень личностной получилась песня "Whole", написанная Крисом и рассказывающая о его матери, окончившей жизнь самоубийством. Другими примечательными композициями с диска стали "My letter" и изданная синглом "Payback". Промоушен альбому "Flaw" устроили на гастролях в компании " Sevendust", " Kittie" и "Cold", после чего стали участниками традиционного Оззфеста.
