Данный проект был задуман выходцами из южной Флориды братьями Доупами еще в 1996 году. Свои мечты они осуществили годом позже, когда перебрались в Нью-Йорк. Состав банды укомплектовали с помощью гитариста Триппа Эйсена, басиста Эйси Слэйда и барабанщика Престона Нэша. Стиль, выбранный группой, сами Доупы охарактеризовали как индастриал-метал грув. Тексты песен "Dope" имели социальную направленность. Их тематика касалась насилия полицейских, расизма, проституции и наркотиков.
Эдсел и Саймон даже разработали целую философию – они выступали за полную свободу, включающую в себя легализацию наркотиков (не зря же они назывались "Dope", что в переводе означает "наркотик"). Братья искренно считали, что перевод торговли наркотой и проституции на легальные рельсы поможет решению экономических проблем и снижению роста преступности.
Первый концерт "Dope" состоялся в нью-йоркском "Elbow room" в 1998-м. В том же году музыканты подготовили и выпустили серию демок. Успех пришел довольно быстро, и в октябре 1998-го группа оказалась подписанной на "Flip records", а вскоре после этого и к мажорному "Epic records". Летом 1999-го "Dope" сделали еще три демки, а в сентябре вышел их дебютный полнометражник "Felons and revolutionaries". Продюсировал альбом Джон Трэйвис. Помимо собственного материала группы, диск включал в себя кавер-версию провокационной композиции "Fuck the police".

То ли концертный график был напряженный, то ли в коллективе возникли пресловутые разногласия, но по окончании тура братья Доуп остались вдвоем. Гитарист Трипп Эйсен нашел себе пристанище в " Static-X", а ударник Престон Нэш влился в ряды "Primer 55". "Dope" же через некоторое время перегруппировались, и теперь их состав выглядел следующим образом: Эдсел Доуп (вокал, гитара), Саймон Доуп (клавишные), Вирус (гитара), Скетчи Шэй (ударные; экс-"Genitorturers"), Слоан "Моси" Джерри (бас).
Данная конфигурация под руководством продюсера Джоша Абрахама в 2001 году выпустила альбом "Life". На следующий год на свет появился новый материал, представленный всего одним треком "No chance", попавшим на сборник "WWF forceable entry" от "Columbia records". Помимо этого "Dope" продолжали усердно гастролировать, иногда выступая уже в качестве хедлайнеров.
