Примерно в это же время работа над дебютным альбомом была закончена. Пластинка представляла собой жесткое буги, и фирме "Atlantic" показалось, что ее саунд слишком уж грубоват. Альбом пришлось перемикшировать, но на этот раз лейбл придрался к обложке. Солидным дядькам не понравилось изображение кактуса, напоминающее мужской половой орган. Эту проблему также утрясли, выставив на всеобщее обозрение более благообразную колючку. Пластинка была очень тепло встречена слушателями и вдохновленные "Кактусы" вновь приступили к сессиям, которые проходили в студии Хендрикса "Electric Lady".
К тому времени группа в полном составе сильно подсела на наркоту. Трава у музыкантов не переводилась, а иногда в ход шел и ЛСД. Тем не менее, команда уже успела создать себе культовый статус, и ее с восторгом принимали на концертах. Не обходилось и без инцидентов и некоторые участники "Cactus" за свое "бурное" поведение время от времени оказывались за решеткой.
Вереница беспрерывных концертов, попоек и сессий вскоре привела к разногласиям и слаженная вначале команда стала давать сбои. Первым задумался об уходе Маккарти, однако у него хватило сил, чтобы принять участие в записи третьего альбома, "Restrictions". Временно Джима заменял Рон Лиджек, но через несколько месяцев он уступил гитару Вернеру Фритцшлингсу. Вслед за этим под давлением "Atlantic" коллектив покинул и Расти Дэй. Новым фронтменом стал Питер Френч из " Atomic rooster", а клавишные были предоставлены в распоряжение Дуэйна Хитчингса. Права на "Cactus" они передали Хитчингсу, и тот, изменив вывеску на "The New Cactus Band", с обновленной командой выпустил диск "Son of Cactus". В 1976 Расти Дэй сделал попытку реанимировать "Cactus", но кроме него из прежних участников состава в этой формации не было и популярность ее ограничивалась штатом Флорида. 4 июня 1980 года Дэй вместе со своим сыном был убит в своем доме.
