А началось все в 1982 году, когда школьные товарищи Вуди Веземэн (гитара) и Рид Маллин (ударные) основали банду под названием "No labels". Третьим участником коллектива стал Майк Дин, взявший на себя обязанности вокалиста и басиста. Вывеску вскоре сменили на "Corrosion of conformity", а микрофонная стойка отошла в распоряжение Эрика Айка.
Эрик принял участие в записи дебютного альбома, после чего исчез в неизвестном направлении. Оставшаяся троица на следующий выпустила EP "Six Songs With Mike Singing", из названия которого следовало что роль вокалиста вновь исполнял Майк. Если первые релизы группы представляли чистый хардкор, то на "Animosity" саунд заметно потяжелел и уклонился в сторону трэша.
В 1987-м с новым вокалистом Саймоном Бобом (экс-"Ugly Americans") был записан мини-альбом "Technocracy". На следующий год Боб ушел из "Corrosion of conformity", а за ним последовал и Дин. В результате на длительное время проект оказался заморожен. Очередная студийная работа появилась на свет лишь в 1991 году. Состав группы на тот момент выглядел следующим образом: Веземэн, Маллин, Карл Эйгел (вокал), Пеппер Кинан (гитара) и Фил Свишер (бас). Карл оказался неважным вокалистом, и вскоре его выперли из команды, а место у микрофона занял Пеппер, начавший потихоньку прибирать бразды правления в свои руки.
Но перестановки на этом не кончились, т.к. вскоре из "Corrosion of conformity" ушел Свишер, примкнувший к Эйгелу в проекте "Loose cannon". Прознавший про освободившуюся вакансию басиста в команду вернулся Дин. В таком составе группа записала "Deliverence" и отправилась в американское турне, апогеем которого стало появление "C.O.C." на фестивале "Monsters Of Rock", возглавляемого " Металликой".
В 1996-м команда представила на суд слушателей очередную работу, "Wiseblood". Пластинка эта заняла 43-ю позицию в британских чартах, а композиция "Drowning In A Daydream" с этого альбома была номинирована на "Грэмми". К сожалению для музыкантов их неожиданно выгнали с "Sony", и это оказалось одной из причин задержки выхода очередного лонгплея на четыре года. Лишь в 2000 году им удалось заключить контракт в фирмой "Sanctuary", которая взялась выпустить "America's Volume Dealer".
В последующее за этим турне не смог отправиться Маллин, угодивший в больницу. Временно его подменил Джимми Бауэр, но по выздоровлении Рид так и не вернулся в группу. Он основал свой собственный проект "Brown", а в "Corrosion of conformity" место ударника занял Мерритт Партридж.
