Песни "Clash" - это призыв к восстанию, призыв к борьбе за свои права. В начале 1976 года двое приятелей Мик Джонс (р. 1956) и Пол Симонон (р. 1957) решили вместе играть рок-музыку. В 1978 году группа провела концерт "Rock Against Racism" в Парке Королевы Виктории, и это выступление положило начало долгому противостоянию панков и наци (иногда только на словах, а иногда и на деле). В ответ на этот концерт наци провели свое выступление, "Rock Against Communism", который был воспринят многими как призыв к новой войне. Это вызвало новую волну протеста и так далее. Сейчас граница между теми и другими проведена достаточно четко - в этом заслуга именно "Clash".
Вторая их пластинка под названием "Give 'Em Enough Rope", вышла осенью 1978 года. Она поднялась до второго места в хит-парадах, а самой запоминающейся песней с нее была "Tommy Gun". Затем последовали еще два релиза - "Cost Of Living" и "London Calling", а в 1980 году вышел EP "Black Market Clash", содержащий записи, не выпускавшиеся ранее.
В 1980 году "Clash" выпустили альбом "Sandinista!", на котором сильно изменили свой саунд. Они отошли от привычного панковского звучания, смешав вместе с панк-роком несколько других музыкальных направлений. Пластинка была воспринята разными слушателями по-разному, но общее впечатление было, что "Clash" больше не играют панк-рок". Так оно и было на самом деле. В 1981 году Джо играл с другими группами, Пол снимался в кино, Мик выпускал пластинку своей подружки, Топпер увлекся театром. Играть панк-рок им надоело. В 1982 вышел диск "Combat Rock" и "Clash" ездили с концертами в Австралию, но... это была уже не та группа, что прежде. В то время как Джо и Пол старались вернуться к старому звучанию, Мик и Топпер пытались сменить саунд.
В 1983 году Топпер и Мик покинули группу, а последняя пластинка "Clash", выпущенная при участии гитаристов Винса Уайта и Ника Шеппарда с Питом Ховардом за ударными, уже не пользовалась успехом. Затем в Англии разразился жестокий кризис, и игра потеряла всякий смысл. С середины восьмидесятых о них ничего не было слышно, но в 1999 году Джо, Пол, Мик и Топпер выпустили диск "From Here To Eternity", содержавший концертные записи "Clash".
