Один из наиболее интересных хардкор-коллективов появился на свет благодаря стараниям гитариста Грега Джинна. Этому парню надоело засилье групп типа " Eagles", " Steely Dan" и " ELO", и он решил, что настало время для нового саунда. Впечатленный простотой и непосредственностью первого альбома " Ramones", Джинн собрал небольшую команду людей, еле умевших обращаться с инструментами, чтобы приступить к музыкальной деконструкции. С самого начала своего существования "Black flag" попали в оппозицию – ведь Калифорния все-таки не очень подходящее место для хардкора. Вообще было удивительно, как группа продержалась первые четыре года.
Вокалисты приходили и уходили, и порой команда играла одни инструменталы, а выйти поорать в микрофон мог любой желающий из толпы слушателей. Первый более-менее устаканившийся состав выглядел следующим образом: Джинн (гитара), Чак Дуковски (бас), Робо (ударные) и Дез Кадена (вокал). Именно в такой конфигурации в конце 1980 года состоялись первые американские гастроли.
Во время этого тура за группой увязался парнишка по имени Генри Роллинз и как-то во время одного из концертов он выскочил на сцену и спел со своими кумирами одну песню. Этого оказалось достаточно, чтобы ему предложили стать фронтменом "Black flag", тем более что Кадена уже подумывал сменить микрофон на гитару. Генри не пришлось долго уговаривать, он тут же распродал свое имущество и влился в ряды коллектива, продолжавшего свои гастроли. Новый состав продержался до конца британского тура в 1981 году, но успел записать дебютную пластинку. В Англии застрял барабанщик Робо, и на выручку "Black flag" пришел Билл Стивенсон из "Descendents".
Тем временем лейбл что-то затянул с выпуском второго альбома, и музыканты решили выпустить его своими силами. В результате оказалось, что группа нарушила контракт и из-за этого была втянута в долгое судебное разбирательство. Несмотря на это музыканты выпустили сборник нереализованных вещей, правда, не став использовать имя "Black flag".
В 1983-м команду оставил Дуковски, и на сессиях следующей пластинки басовые партии записывал Чак, скрывшийся под псевдонимом Дэйл Никсон. Новый басист (а точнее басистка) обнаружился к концу года – это была Кира Росслер. Следующий год выдался напряженным – группа записала два альбома и при этом интенсивно гастролировала как в Америке, так и в Европе. Один раз "Black flag" умудрились даже отыграть три концерта в разных штатах в течение 24 часов. Но 1985-й год оказался еще более активным по сравнению с предыдущим – на этот раз было записано аж три альбома.
Не выдержав столь напряженной работы из группы вскоре ушли Росслер и Стивенсон. Место за ударной установкой занял Энтони Мартинез, а басуху подхватил Сэл Ревуэлта. Однако обновленный состав не оставил после себя никаких записей и провел лишь одно турне. В середине 1986 года Грег Джинн собрал своих коллег и объявил им о своем уходе из "Black flag", что автоматически означало роспуск команды.
