"Into the Unknown", вышедший в 1983-м, привлек некоторой внимание к "Bad Religion" на панковской сцене. После его выпуска состав группы несколько видоизменился – новым басистом стал Пол Дедона а новым ударником – Дэйви Голдмэн.
На этом текучка кадров не закончилась и в 1984 году из компании свалил Гуревиц, занявшийся освоением наркотиков. "Старичок" Граффин тогда решил полностью обновить состав, взяв к себе гитариста Грега Хетсона (экс-"Circle Jerks"), басиста Тима Галлегоса и вернувшегося Файнстоуна.
Эта конфигурация выпустила жесткий панковский EP-шник "Back to the Known". В альбом вошла песня "Along the Way", которая до сих пор является одной из самых популярных песен группы. "Suffer", вышедший на следующий год был назван лучшим альбомом как на радио "Flipside", так и на "Maximum Rock and Roll", а когда в 1989-м "Bad Religion" выпустили "No Control", их известность подскочила довольно внезапно, несмотря на плохой прием публики восточного побережья США во время тура "Suffer".
В 1990 году группа выпустила истинный шедевр, "Against the Grain", включавший 17 быстрых, коротких песен. В 1993-м на волне интереса к альтернативной музыке к команде было привлечено внимание мажорных лейблов, с одним из которых, "Atlantic Records", парни заключили контракт. Выпущенный было на "Epitaph" альбом "Recipe for Hate" быстренько переиздали на "Атлантике".
