Американская банда "Blue cheer", названная одним из галлюционогенов, получила известность благодаря своим экспериментам с громкостью звука. Команда была основана на развалинах "San Francisco blues band" Дики Петерсоном (бас), Леем Стефенсом (гитара) и Полом Вэйли (ударные). В первоначальном составе также присутствовали вокалист, клавишник и еще один гитарист, но они вскоре исчезли, испугавшись за свои барабанные перепонки. В начале 1968-го вышел первый сингл "Blue cheer" с композицией Эдди Кочрэна "Summertime Blues", занявший 14-ю строчку в "Billboard".
Группа тогда пользовалась успехом, и доходило даже до того, что у нее на разогреве играли " Pink Floyd". Вскоре появился и первый альбом, "Vincebus Eruptum", ставший самым коммерчески успешным релизом коллектива. Пластинка сразу же угодила в лучшую американскую десятку. На время последующих гастролей в состав приняли клавишника Ральфа Бернса Келлога.
Второй альбом, "Outside inside" вполне оправдывал свое название, поскольку из-за немыслимой громкости вышли из строя студийные мониторы, и оставшийся материал пришлось записывать на свежем воздухе. Однако это не спасло Стефенса, и он во время сессий оглох (впоследствии он немного оклемался и даже занимался сольной карьерой). Новым гитаристом стал Рэнди Холден, который поучаствовал в создании уже менее агрессивного альбома "New! Improved!". Холден пробыл в "Blue cheer" недолго и вскоре уступил место Гэри Йодеру. Кадровые перестановки на этом не закончились. Когда Вэйли за ударными сменил Норман Майелл, группа едва успела записать четвертую пластинку, как опять лишилась гитариста. После непродолжительных поисков вакансию занял Брюс Стефенс из "Mint tattoo".
Два последующих альбома практически не имели коммерческого успеха и даже не присутствовали в американских чартах. Такое положение дел никоим образом не радовало музыкантов, и в начале 70-х было объявлено о роспуске "Blue cheer".
В 1975-м Петерсон пытался возродить проект с новыми коллегами, но затея эта вскоре рухнула. Следующая реанимация состоялась в 1978-м, когда собрались вместе Петерсон, Вэйли и Стефенс, позвав на помощь братьев Кеш. Но и этот вариант просуществовал недолго. Очередной камбэк состоялся в 1984-м в составе: Петерсон, Вэйли и Тони Рэйнер (гитара). На этот раз перед очередным распадом музыкантам удалось записать один альбом. В конце 80-х и в течение 90-х вывеска "Blue cheer" то исчезала с музыкального горизонта, то вновь появлялась. Неизменным членом команды на всем протяжении оставался лишь Дики Петерсон. В 1999-м году, когда во время японских гастролей был записан концертник "Hello Tokyo, Bye Bye Osaka", компанию ему составляли Пол Вэйли и Эндрю Макдоналд.
"Blue cheer" до сих пор уважаемы как одни из пионеров стоунер-рока. Их каверы исполняли такие команды как " Smashing pumpkins" и " Mudhoney", а итальянский лейбл "Black Widow" выпустил альбом "Blue Explosion", посвященный группе.
