To compare and contrast virtual and real communities we must examine the similarities
and differences between them. I would assume virtual would have more negatives than
positives when compared to real communities. You cant get much out of assuming
though so lets find out if the grass is actually greener on the other side of the fence.
The similarities for virtual and real communities are: First they both involve people from
mass numbers or minute as to two people. They also involve society some way
shape or form. These communities both can inform you news wise on certain topics. They
both can entertain such as jokes, and comedy. Finally they both can teach you by asking
questions.
However these communities share many differences. Virtual expresses itself differently
than real communities. Being informed on the countries news for example. Virtual you can
go to news chat and talk to people in different countries as the topic happens. Where as
real life the guys you play basket ball with on weekends informs after the fact. What also
varies is the intimacy. If someone types ?I Love You? on a computer screen rather than
them looking deeply into your eyes and expressing it physically, then the intimacy is lost.
To conclude my assumptions is that both communities shared negative and positives
points. Discovering you loose intimacy with a virtual community, and you loose up to
dateness on real communities. No mater what technology we create it
always will have a human basis.
