Movie Review: Saving Private Ryan

Europe in 1944 and World War II is in its final closing stages with the Allied D-Day invasion imminent. One mother has sent her four boys of to war, and in the closing weeks three of them die. The Government takes it upon themselves to make sure her fourth son gets back alive. So an eight-man Allied team of soldiers must make the treacherous journey through the bloody battlefields of the Normandy invasion to rescue the young man who has become lost behind Nazi lines during a botched paratrooper mission. In the movie, Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) survives the American landing at Omaha Beach in World War II, but then he s given a new mission: to find and extract Private James Ryan (Matt Damon), the youngest of four brothers.

After watching the movie, I realized that thousands of young American soldiers suffered from World War II and that the war drove them crazy. The movie mainly focused on the invasion of Normandy, including historically correct facts. The United States, assured of a weather break, decided to invade Normandy, which was a “mighty endeavor,” as President Franklin D. Roosevelt described it to the American people, “to preserve our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity.” The movie also showed me how much the soldier wanted to return to their homes but it was their patriotism and their love for the people that kept them fighting and risking their lives.

The movie was very interesting and at the same time educational. I definitely think that this movie will have effect on the American memory of World War II. In my case, after I watched it, I learned that combat is just the worst experience a human being can ever have. .Saving Private Ryan x allowed me to see the reality of combat and understand the consequences of not only World War II but also the consequences of any war.
