1. История
Газета была основана в 1877 году Стилсоном Хатчинсом (Stilson Hutchins). В 1880 году она добавила воскресный выпуск, став первой городской газетой, выходящей 7 дней в неделю. Девять лет спустя, в рамках кампании по продвижению подписки, владельцы предложили руководителю музыкальной группы Marine Band композитору Джону Филипу Сузе (John Philip Sousa) сочинить марш, который сопровождал бы церемонию награждения победителей конкурса коротких сочинений — очерков. «Марш Washington Post» входит в число классических произведений Сузы.
В 1899 году, в разгар Испанско-Американской войны, газета опубликовала классическую иллюстрацию Клиффорда Берримена (Clifford K. Berryman) «Remember the Maine».
