Король зверей лев Нобль устраивает прием по случаю праздника Вознесения. Приглашены все звери. Лишь пройдоха Лис дерзнул не явиться на королевский пир. Волк Изенгрин подает льву жалобу на Лиса, своего давнего врага: мошенник изнасиловал жену волка Грызенту. Нобль устраивает судебное разбирательство. Он решает дать Лису шанс исправиться и вместо жестокого наказания приказывает Изенгрину заключить с Лисом мирный договор.
В этот момент звери видят похоронную процессию: петух и куры несут на носилках растерзанную Лисом курицу. Они падают в ноги Ноблю, умоляя его покарать злодея. Разгневанный лев приказывает медведю Бирюку найти Лиса и доставить во дворец. Но хитрому пройдохе удается и его обвести вокруг пальца: он заманивает любителя меда к пчелиному улью, и неуклюжий Бирюк застревает в дупле дуба. Лесник, увидев медведя, созывает людей. Еле живой, забитый палками, бедняга возвращается к Ноблю. Лев разгневан. Он поручает коту Тиберу доставить злодея. Не посмев ослушаться приказа владыки, тот отправляется к Лису. Он решает хитростью и льстивыми речами завлечь преступника во дворец. Но и на этот раз ловкий проныра надувает королевского посланника. Он предлагает ему отправиться вместе на охоту — в амбар к священнику, где много мышей, и в курятник. Кот попадает в западню.
Разъяренный лев решает пойти войной на преступника. Звери отправляются в поход. Подойдя к крепости, где скрылся Лис, они понимают, что не так-то просто преодолеть каменные стены. Но, охваченные жаждой мести, звери все же разбивают лагерь вокруг замка. Целыми днями штурмуют они крепость, но все их усилия тщетны.
Звери, потеряв всякую надежду взять крепость, ложатся спать. Лис же тем временем, потихоньку выбравшись из замка, решает отомстить врагам. Он привязывает хвосты и лапы спящих к стволам деревьев и ложится под бок к королеве. Проснувшись, испуганная львица поднимает крик. Звери, увидев Лиса, пытаются подняться, но не могут сдвинуться с места. Слизняк Медлив, решив всех освободить, сгоряча рубит им хвосты и лапы. Лис уже готов удрать, но в последний момент Медливу удается схватить прохвоста. Наконец-то Лис пленен.
Нобль выносит жестокий, но справедливый приговор — казнить лгуна и злодея. Жена и сыновья Лиса, узнав, что ему грозит неминуемая гибель, умоляют владыку помиловать преступника, предлагая взамен богатый выкуп. В конце концов лев соглашается простить Лиса, но при условии, что тот оставит свои дерзкие проделки. Обрадованный Лис скрывается, как только с его шеи снимают веревку. Но выясняется, что в толчее и неразберихе Лис совершил еще одно преступление — раздавил мышь. А его уже и след простыл. Нобль приказывает каждому, кто увидит преступника, не дожидаясь судебного разбирательства, расправиться с ним на месте.
Тяжелые времена наступили для Лиса, Он вынужден скитаться, скрываясь от всех. Не так-то легко стало добывать себе пропитание. Но хитрость и смекалка по-прежнему выручают его. То ему удается льстивыми речами выманить у ворона кусок сыра, то он надувает рыбаков, возвращавшихся домой с богатым уловом. На этот раз Лис притворяется мертвым, и простаки кладут его в повозку. Тем временем проныра досыта набивает себе брюхо, да еще и прихватывает часть добычи с собой. То-то радовались его домочадцы! Тем временем Изенгрин, рыщущий в поисках съестного, подходит к дому Лиса. Учуяв запах жареной рыбы, он, забыв о смертной вражде с Лисом и все его преступления, просит накормить его. Но хитрец говорит волку, что ужин предназначается монахам, а они принимают в свою общину каждого, кто захочет. Изголодавшийся Изенгрин изъявляет желание вступить в Тиронский орден. Лис уверяет волка, что для этого необходимо выстричь тонзуру. Он велит ему просунуть голову в дверную щель и поливает ее кипятком. Когда же волк, измученный этими пытками, напоминает ему о том, что тот обещал его накормить, Лис предлагает Изенгрину самому наловить себе рыбы. Он отводит его на замерзший пруд, привязывает к его хвосту ведро и велит ему опустить его в прорубь. Когда лед замерзает и волк уже не в силах сдвинуться с места, к пруду собираются люди. Увидев волка, они с палками набрасываются на него. Оставшись без хвоста, Изенгрин едва уносит ноги.
Король зверей Нобль внезапно заболевает тяжелой болезнью. Со всего света стекаются к нему прославленные врачеватели, но ни один из них не может помочь льву. Барсук Гринбер, который приходится кузеном Лису, убеждает его, что единственный способ заслужить прощение и добиться благоволения короля — исцелить его. Собрав в чудесном саду целебные травы и обобрав спящего пилигрима, он предстает перед Ноблем. Король разгневан тем, что наглый Лис посмел явиться ему на глаза; но тот объясняет Ноблю цель своего визита. Он говорит, что для исцеления больного потребуется шкура волка, рога оленя и шерсть кота. Король приказывает слугам исполнить его просьбу. Лис ликует: Изенгрин, олень и кот Тибер — его давние враги и обидчики — теперь опозорены навсегда. С помощью снадобий, приготовленных Лисом, король выздоравливает. Хитрец наконец завоевывает любовь короля.
Лев отправляется на войну с язычниками. Он поручает Лису охранять дворец и назначает его своим наместником. Воспользовавшись отсутствием Нобля, он соблазняет его жену и живет, ни в чем себе не отказывая. Вскоре у него созревает коварный план: он подговаривает гонца объявить зверям, что лев погиб на поле брани. Гонец зачитывает зверям завещание короля, состряпанное мошенником Лисом: после смерти льва трон должен перейти к Лису, а вдова Нобля станет супругой новоиспеченного короля. Скорбь по погибшему государю сменяется радостью: никто не хочет ссориться с новым королем.
Вскоре лев с победой возвращается домой. Он штурмует замок и берет предателя в плен. Петух Шантеклер набрасывается на самозванца, но тот притворяется мертвым, и его сбрасывают в канаву. На мертвечину слетаются вороны, но им не удается полакомиться: Лис отрывает одной из них лапу и убегает. Вороны жалуются королю, и тот посылает к Лису барсука Гринбера. Желая выручить кузена, Гринбер возвращается и рассказывает Ноблю, что на этот раз Лис на самом деле скончался, хотя тот цел и невредим. Звери ликуют, один только лев разочарован и опечален неожиданной кончиной врага.
