Имена Уоррена Хэйнса и Аллена Вуди были знакомы многим любителям музыки еще со времени их появления в составе "Allman brothers band". К "Братьям" они присоединились в 1989 году, составив хорошую компанию Грегу Оллману и Дики Беттсу. Пять лет спустя Уоррен и Аллен вместе с барабанщиком Мэттом Эбтсом организовали сайд-проект под названием "Gov't mule". В музыке новой группы явно чувствовалось влияние "Allman brothers band", но вместе с тем творчество "мулов" напоминало славные времена "Cream", а некоторые критики проводили параллели и с "Led Zeppelin". В 1995-м "Gov't Mule" дебютировали с одноименным альбомом, вышедшим на "Capricorn Records", а на следующий год выдали концертник "Live at Roseland Ballroom".

В 2000-м вышла новая студийная работа, "Life Before Insanity", ставшая последней для одного из основателей коллектива, Аллена Вуди. 26 августа 2000 года Вуди был найден мертвым в одном из номеров нью-йоркского отеля. Коллеги тяжело переживали утрату, но все-таки решили сохранить вывеску "Gov't mule". К тому же у музыкантов было накоплено достаточно материала для записи очередной пластинки. В 2001 году Уоррен и Мэтт выпустили первый альбом, посвященный своему товарищу, "The deep end, Vol.1".
Правда, в отличие от большинства трибьютных пластинок, состоящих из перезаписанных старых вещей, на диске был представлен новый материал, вытащенный из запасников Уоррена Хэйнса. Альбом, как всегда, содержал фирменные "муловские" гитарные риффы, хотя в каждую песню привносили свое звучание "гости".
В списке приглашенных музыкантов значились бас-гитаристы Крис Вуд, Бутси Коллинз, Стефан Лессард, Вилли Викс, клавишники Берни Уоррелл, Чак Ливелл, а на одном из треков пел Джерри Кантрелл. В альбом вошла песня "Worried down with the blues", написанная Хэйнсом в соавторстве с Вуди. Для ее исполнения Уоррен пригласил участников "Allman brothers band" Отила Бебриджа (бас), Дерека Тракса (гитара) и Грега Оллмана (клавишные, вокал). Бебридж впоследствии помогал "Gov't mule" в большинстве концертов группы, которые музыканты играли в поддержку пластинки. В 2002 году команда выпустила вторую часть "The deep end".
