Одним ветреным норвежским днем в одном из репетеционных залов Хаугесунда повстречались Грутле Кьеллсон (р. 24 декабря 1973) и Ивар Бьорнсон. Ивар играл в одной трэшевой команде, а Грутле только что организовал дэтовый проект. Парни решили объеденить свои усилия, привлекли еще Хейна Фроде Хансена, и основали группу "Phobia". Ориентир был взят на творчество " Autopsy" и ранних "Dark throne". Команда просуществовала немногим более года, и Грутле с Иваром захотели сделать какой-нибудь другой проект. Основательно побродив по мрачным лесам Хаугесунда, парни набрались вдохновения и приступили к делу, призвав на помощь барабанщика Трима Торсона. Название новоиспеченная группа получила по песне " Immortal" "Enslaved in Rot".
Порепетировав полгода, "Enslaved" отправились в студию и попытались записать первое демо, представлявшее собой смесь блэка, дэта и экспериментальной электроники. Качество записи получилось ужасным, и музыканты забросили демку в дальний угол. Примерно с год группа сочиняла песни и репетировала, прежде чем снова оказалась в студии. На этот раз результат был успешным, и на свет появилась полноценная демка, "Yggdrasill".
Благодаря ей команда получила контракт с "Deathlike Silence Records", а вскоре "Enslaved" заинтересовался недавно основанный английский лейбл "Candlelight Records". На нем и был выпущен сплит-диск "Hordanes Land"/" Emperor", ставший на сегодняшний день классикой экстремального металла. Затем настала очередь дебютного полноценного альбома. Когда "Vikingligr Veldi" был уже практически готов пришла мрачная весть – глава "Deathlike Silence" Еуронимоус был убит. За выпуск пластинки взялись партнеры лейбла, "Voices of Wonder", однако долго сотрудничества у группы с ними не получилось и вскоре их пути разошлись. "Vikingligr Veldi" был все-таки выпущен весной 1994 года и привлек к себе внимание металлистов во всем мире.
Следующий релиз, "Frost", выпущенный французской фирмой "Osmose Productions", утвердил "Enslaved" как одних из грандов викинг-металла. Вслед за выходом пластинки состоялось глобальное европейское турне в компании с коллегами по лейблу "Marduk". Очередного альбома фанам пришлось ждать целых три года. Одной из причин тому было исчезновение из группы барабанщика Торсона, позднее материализовавшегося в " Emperor".
"Eld" вскоре после выхода стал культовым альбомом, несмотря на то, что он был менее доступен в продаже, чем предыдущие релизы. На нем "Enslaved" ушли от монотонности и простоты, обогатив саунд сложными прогрессивными элементами. К тому же Грутле на этот раз использовал "чистый" вокал. После появления "Eld" из группы слинял очередной ударник, Харалд Хелгесон, и для последуещего тура срочно рекрутировали Дирге Репа, заодно добавив в состав гитариста Роя Кронхейма (р. 16 ноября 1973). Гастроли прошли успешно и обоим было предложено остаться в "Enslaved" на постоянной основе, на что парни ответили согласием. В 1998 году обновленный коллектив вновь взбудоражил металлическую общественность, выбросив на прилавки "Blodhemn". На этом альбоме мелодичные прогрессивные элементы были отброшены, а на первый план выдвинулись яростные и безжалостные риффы.
2000-й год группа провела на гастролях в компании с " Morbid angel", "The crown", "Behemoth", "Hypnos" и "Dying fetus". В 2002-м Кронхейма, переставшего устраивать остальных членов команды, попросили уйти, а для концертов вместо него наняли сессионщика.
