Feelings and Emotions in Film
Braveheart is one of the most powerful and emotional films ever made. It draws feelings and emotions out of the audience with ease and affects everyone that watches it. It includes almost any emotions you can think of throughout the story and makes the viewer feel all of them.
The story is about a man called William Wallace who seeks revenge for the wrongs England has committed against Scotland. It is started when William’s wife, Myrrhn, was killed by the English for not abiding by marital laws. This scene in which Myrrhn is killed saddens me because she was killed wrongfully. I think that the showing of unjustness angers and saddens viewers because they feel that such a thing should not happen and have been brought up that way.
When William gives the main speech of the film before battle, pleading with his men to fight for their freedom, it gives the theme a good versus evil perspective. In good versus evil type movies, usually viewers are given the satisfaction of good prevailing and winning. When the battle is won, I felt a great deal of pride, maybe that is because I am part Scottish, I tend to believe that it is because I am satisfied with the good side winning.
I think that a great deal of emotion in this film is projected onto the viewers by the actor’s expressions and camera shots of faces. For example, when William and Myrrhn are riding in the rain you feel happy because they are and you can see them smiling. Also when they are healing the old man’s arrow wound with a branding rod, you can almost feel the pain, just by looking at his face and his reaction.
Overall, emotions are what really make movies. Action movies have a lot of pride and in drama, lots of sadness and happiness. By taking in all of the emotions we get more and more involved in the plot and enjoy the movie much more.
