Objective

The objective of this experiment was to analyze filters implemented with resistors and capacitors. The filters examined in this experiment include the first, second, and third order unity-gain high pass filter and a high-pass shelving filter. Each unity-gain high pass filter was designed using a frequency created by the birth date of the experimenter. The high-pass shelving filter was designed with a frequency given by the professor.

Theory

A filter is defined to be a network for which the complex transfer function is a function of frequency. This experiment focused on two different types of filters. The first filter was a unity-gain high pass filter. It is defined by

|T(jw)| = { KH f *fc

{ 0 f*fc

where KH is the gain when f = ?. This is known as the high-pass filter because it passes the higher frequencies and not the lower frequencies.

The second filter used was the high-pass shelving filter. The ideal high-pass shelving filter has a gain of KL at low frequencies and a gain of KH at high frequencies where KH * KL. At f = fc the gain abruptly changes from KL to KH. The gain is finite at both f = 0 and f = ?.
