Eleanor Roosevelt Essay, Research Paper
Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York City, Oct. 11, 1884, died Nov. 7, 1962.
Eleanor’s mother died when she was eight, her father when she was ten.
She was raised by her grandmother after the premature death of
her parents. In 1905 she married her cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt;
they had six children, one of them died in infancy. Although extremely
shy, she became active in politics after her husband was found with polio in
1921.Eleanor Roosevelt is one of America’s great reforming leaders, She had a
very strong impact on national policy toward youth, blacks, women, the poor, and
the United Nations.
As the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, she was the country’s most
active First Lady. Eleanor Roosevelt helped draft the UN Declaration of Human
Rights. When Franklin became president in 1933, Eleanor Roosevelt showed her
self as a powerful voice on behalf of a wide range of social causes, including
youth employment and civil rights for blacks and women.
She started press conferences, had her own radio program, and wrote a
daily newspaper column, “My Day,”. After her husband’s death, she continued in
public life. She served (1945-52,1961-62) as a U.S. delegate to the United
Nations and helped draft the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
The Great Depression during the 1930s got Mrs. Roosevelt’s concerns. She
sponsored an experiment at Arthurdale, West Virginia, She wanted to bring
small manufacturing to big manufacturing companies. Doing that would get a lot
more jobs for people. During World War II she visited American soldiers around
the world. She died in New York City on November 7, 1962.
