Alexander Graham Bell Essay, Research Paper
Alexander Graham bell was a very important man, not only to Canada but to the whole world as well, and it was not an easy road to success. His contributions to the world of communication were unmatched by any one. This essay will be arguing the facts about Bell that have been stated through 3 main topics, which are, Bell s contribution to deaf people. Graham Bell made a contribution to the communication world. Finally he ran into many problems while in innovations were occurring.
Alexander made an extremely large contribution to the deaf people by doing many things. Before he was born Alec s father was trying to develop a method of speech for deaf people while this experimenting was going on he had a son who little did he know would rock the world with the invention of the phone. During his early years Bell and his father perfected this method of visible speech for the deaf. Alexander invented a glove whit visible speech letters printed on different parts of the glove so when touched by different fingers spelled different words. He and his family toured around the country showing this item off and soon gained much respect. After bell moved to Canada he decided that this glove was not enough. Soon he opened schools meant specifically for the deaf people to learn and there are still some schools to this day that have been founded by Bell just for deaf people. During one of his many visits to one of his school he met a young student by the name of Mabel Hubbard I have discovered that my interest in my dear pupil has ripened into a far deeper feeling (always inventing, 28) this caused some controversy between the two families because of the significant age difference and the fact the she was deaf, also they didn t want them to have kids for there was a possibly of deafness being hereditary (Alexander Graham Bell An Inventive Life, 16). Also people in the community were talking about how Bell was going to marry a deaf girl, but despite this wishes of the families the got married and had children who turned out fine. Mabel describes her first meeting wit Bell I did not like him. He was tall, with jet black hair and eyes but dressed badly and carelessly in an old fashion suit he seemed hardly a gentleman (Alexander Graham Bell An inventive life, 16). After they got married Bell wanted to devote even more of himself to the deaf so he started to private visible speech lessons teaching deaf mutes to communicate with ease.
The Second of many reasons Bell was an excellent man was that He made a phenomenal contribution to the communication world. When he was young and just got in to experimenting with sound and how it travels he made a voice box out of the larynx of a sheep and he was able for it to communicate words like mother and father. Bell was fascinated with the invention of the telegraph but pondered about how it was only able to send one message at a time. Bell went on a mission to make this invention better by making it able to send multiple messages and did so by using special wires that created an electric current when coiled a certain way. After the success of the multiple line telegraph he perfected another invention called the Phonograph, which recorded sounds and played them back through a tin cylinder (world book encyclopedia, 379) originally the sound was faint and choppy but it was soon perfected. After this was complete Bell s knowledge and fascination with sound led him to his most famous invention, the Telephone. One day when he and his assistant Watson were experimenting with the idea of sending sound vibrations through wires when a reed that Watson was working with got stuck in the machine but bell in the other room on the other end of the receiver heard Watson trying to get it out. They couldn t transmit voice yet but they were on their way. Their big breakthrough was made on March 10, 1876, when in one room Bell spilled acid on his pants and said into the newest receiver Mr. Watson com in there, I need to see you (Alexander Graham Bell Inventor of the Telephone, 12), and the first telephone message was sent. His Last invention was the hydrofoil, which held the water speed record on January 25, 1915 at 112 km/h Bell never rode on this though. This was an excellent way to transport goods over lakes at great speed.
On his road to success Bell ran into many problems but in the end it shows that if you put your mind to something u can do almost anything. When Bell was just a boy his two brothers died of tuberculosis and his parents were in fear of him dying so they moved to Canada when there he spent a lot of time by himself outside and became friends with some native people and soon was with them all the time teaching them how to play chess, also he made a cove by a river and he would go there for days at a time and just think. All of the fresh air brought Bell to good health and that is when he started doing his prime inventions. Before his magnificent invention of the phone bell went through many failed efforts he could never get the right electric current for sound to be transmitted so it took years for it to be perfected. People heard about bell discovery of sound traveling through wires and decided to try to beat him to it. One man actually patented the idea of sound through wires but never could do it properly. Finally bell came though with his patented invention and patented it learning from previous mistakes. His first public showing of the phone from Brantford to Mount Pleasant bell spoke though the receiver but the other end could only hear crackling so Bell had to ride 8km to Mount Pleasant and change the voltage running through the wires and then finally after 2 tries he got the message to come across. Along the way Bell got a new fascination for flying things. He studies birds for hours and made many different styles of kites and filially he tried to make a flying machine with no motor propelled like a kite by the wind, but unfortunately the Wright brothers came out with a plane with a motor which put Bells machine back in the shed. (Always Inventing, 9)
Alexander Graham Bell was not very important and his inventions would have been done by one of the people who stole them from him. Also it was by accident that he invented the phone and even discovering the theory of the phone was a mistake. He also wasn t even Canadian. No he wasn t Canadian but he moved to Canada at a young age and most of his known work was done in Canada. Also if he didn t do it some one else would have but who knows how far down the road, and when ever something is invented improvements are always made upon them and they would not have been done until a later date. His discovery was an accident but almost every other famous inventor has stumbled on to an invention by accident so then you would have to say that every other inventor isn t able to do thing following a specific theory.
To close this essay if not for the greatness of Mr. Alexander Graham Bell the communication world as we know it today would not be nearly the same So Alexander Graham Bell not only affected Canada but the whole world as well, and it was not an easy road to success. Wherever you find an inventor, you may give him wealth or you may take from him all that he has; and he will go on inventing. He can no more help inventing that he can help thinking or breathing Alexander Graham Bell. (Always Inventing, 1)
