Changing Characters (Gatsby) Essay, Research Paper
Some peoples lives are prosaic, until they make a contemporary change. In the Great Gatsby, three round characters changed. Maybe the changes in these three characters were not very pristine; but they were in some little way. The structure, cadence, and style were intrinsic.
Jay Gatsby or James Gatz as previously known was a round character who changed but then again did not. Gastby partially changed his life style for Daisy. He wanted her back in his life and he wanted her to be happy. He couldn’t change though could he? He created the life style he lived. It was his dream world. Daisy was unfortunately pulled into Gatsby’s dream world. His new money compared to her old money. He also couldn’t change his love for her. The cadence in the writing of this book was very undulated. It was so undulated that you had to read Gatsby’s character description a few times. “He smiled understandingly much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, which you may come across four or five times in life. Precisely at that point it vanished and I was looking at an elegant young rough-neck, a year or two over thirty, whose elaborate formality of speech just missing being absurd.” said Nick. Gatsby was not described in any way as being supercilious. But yet one would think if he had all this money then why wouldn’t he be. Well Scott Fitzgerald, already had a few characters picked out for the roles of the supercilious snob. Fitzgerald made Gatsby a very urbane man.
Nick the veritable character in this story, had his own beliefs. Yes, maybe he grew up in a rich family but he still had morals. His morals were shown throughout the story. In the story he became vulnerable to Daisy, Jordan, Gatsby, and Tom. Nick had problems saying no to people. He changed slightly in the story. The money and the life style he had no longer made him happy. He felt that people in East and West Egg were unhappy, and empty. Nick had a family and he never really felt empty until his friends and acquaintances started dying. That is when he wanted to go and live with his parents again. Fitzgerald’s style of writing was not narrative. He wanted to get out of that style. He uses phrases in his style of writing for this book. Figurative language is also seen throughout the book. Nick said, “The abnormal mind is quick to detect and attach itself to this quality when it appears in a normal person, and so it came about that in college I was unjustly accused of being a politician, because I was privy to the secret griefs of wild, unkown men.”
Daisy made changes that were some what foreseen. Daisy Buchanan was married to Tom Buchanan. Tom was not a round character like Daisy. Most of the changes that she made did not have punctilious planning. When she was pulled into Gatsby’s dream world, she became disconcerted. Daisy had no idea who she wanted to be with. She only knew that she had a few problems that she needed to take care of. But what is a person to do when they have two people that love them dearly? She changed her attitude. She became more of a supercilious snob than before. Daisy had more money and more material things than she could handle. That’s what blew it all. She could no longer handle her life and when she killed Myrtle that was the end. That was the end of her affairs, and she went in to partial hiding. The structure in this story is quite off yet beautiful. Fitzgerald wrote this book in boxes. First he started out describing a character and then he would move to detail. And he kept this up throughout the book. It was a very creative way of writing and it kept the reader partially in suspense and it helped make reading smoother.
Fitzgerald was a wonderful and androit writer. Structure, cadence, and style were intrinsic. Thank you for taking the time to read my essay.
