The first recognised human relationship, was that of Adam and Eve. After the happening of Creation, God took soil and made Adam, and placed him on earth. Deciding to give Adam a companion, God took a rib from Adam, thus the creation of Eve. The story of Adam and Eve, is God s plan for future people, as they made a mistake, but they were forgiven and led a happy life from then on. This relates to many Christians today, as many are reformed criminals or people who have sinned, and everything will be forgotten, once they are forgiven by God. Also Adam and Eve heavily relied on God, many married couples today are advised to include God in their lives.
Throughout the bible there are many references of views and discussions of marriage and divorce, such as in the Book of Hosea, which is basically reinforcing the idea of forgiveness in marriage. In this book, God told Hosea to marry a woman who would be unfaithful to him, in the same way his people have left him. After leaving his wife, God told Hosea, Go again, and show your love for a woman who is committing adultery with a lover. You must love her just as I still love the people of Israel. This is the bible reference where it shows God s forgiveness and trust in marriage.
In Mark 10:9, Jesus view on divorce is written. When someone asks if a man could divorce his wife, Jesus replies with, A man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife and the two will become one. So they are no longer two, but one. Man must not separate, then, what God has joined together. Jesus went further on, to explain that when a person divorces their partner, and marries another lover, they are committing adultery.
In the Ten Commandments, the seventh command is Thou shall not commit adultery. The Ten Commandments, are the rules with what Christians should live by, so to commit adultery again and again, and not ask for forgiveness, would result in the person not being a Christian anymore.
In 2 Samuel 11 the powerful King David participated in adultery with Bathsheba who cheated on her husband, who was later killed. When David heard of this, he sent for Bathsheba, and they married. God was very angry and upset with Davis, as he let Uriah (bathsheba s husband) die, and consequently married Bathsheba. To do this was a sin, but the king of Israel to do it, hurt God even more, so God forgave David, but sent the punishment of certain descendants of David would die a violent death. David thought, as he was a king, he was powerful enough to break a marriage, but in the end no one is more powerful than God.
In John 8 1:11, a woman is brought before Jesus, the woman had committed adultery, in Moses law she would be stoned as a punishment. If Jesus let this happen he would have fell for the trap which was set for him, instead he said that people who had never caused any sin could throw a stone, this resulted in everyone walking away except Jesus, and he forgave the woman.
In John 2: 1-12, Jesus performs the first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding, this shows the significance of marriage and weddings to Jesus.
In Paul s letter in 1 Corinthians 7, he is writing about the relationship in a marriage between a man and woman. I picked up on Paul was dealing with the issue of women as inferiors as in his letter, men were always spoke of first, and women left to last. Still, women are seen as the inferior race, and the inferior role in a marriage.
In the following references Isaiah 25: 6-9, Matthew 22:1-13 and 25:1-12 and Revelations 18: 6-10 and 21: 1-4, the wedding is seen as the unification of God and his people.
In a Christian wedding vows are made by each partner to one another. The first part of the vow is; I N take you N to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part according to God s holy law and this is my solemn vow. This is saying, that however much your partner changes, in such examples as health, wealth, you will still carry on and love them,. And remain their partner till one of them dies.
The second part of the vows is as follows;
I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage, in my body I honour you, all that I am I give to you, all that I have I share with you, within the love of God, father, son and holy spirit.
This part of the vow is highlighting the many references in the bible, which see the marriage as a unification of two people, from the wedding, they will got throughout life as one, sharing and caring with each other.
