Siberian Huskies Essay, Research Paper
Siberian Huskies are thought to be descendants of Chukchi sled which lived in the Siberian Arctic. For over 3,000 years these dogs have been utilized to pull sleds and heard reindeer in the arctic. These dogs have the unique ability to travel extremely long distances on small amounts of food making them a perfect choice for the sled dog teams. Perhaps the most notable use of these dogs was to deliver the antidote that halted a diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska. A statue of the lead dog, Balto, stands in Central Park, New York honoring their brave endeavor. The Siberian is world renown for it’s fast pace and always alert behavior. It is an offshoot of the Spitz breed and has an off-standing coat. Much information about the dogs attitude can be told by looking at it’s tail position. If the tail is up over the back this indicates the dog is alert and may feel threatened. If the tail is down and relaxed this indicates the dog is in a good disposition.
There are many important features of this unique breed. Huskies should be medium sized dogs, have moderate bone, very well balanced features and proportions. Huskies should be brisk and move easily around. His coat should have a light sheen and not be matted. The ears, head, and eyes should be well balanced and proportioned. On some occasions there may be a difference in the color of the eyes of the dog. This is something that can add to the value of your dog as it is sought after in breeders. Both sexes of the Siberian Husky are capable of work. The Siberian Husky was brought to Alaska from Siberia in 1909. The Siberian Husky was admitted to the American Kennel Club in 1930 having the distinct recognition of being the first American Kennel Club registered Siberian Husky was named Fairbanks Princess Chena. The Siberian Husky is world renowned for it’s racing abilities and it’s high endurance levels.
The Siberian Husky is a popular dog and this has led to it’s breeding in puppy mills. Puppy mills are factories that produce puppies at an astonishing rate to try to make as much money as possible. These puppy factories are very unsanitary and more often then not they produce puppies that are ill or sick and that will not last very long. These puppy mills are illegal in most states and most often are run under the counter so that the buyer believes they are purchasing a healthy puppy. Siberian huskies shed through out the year are not a good choice for people who suffer from dog hair related allergies. Siberian Huskies also require a fenced in area because being sledding dogs they require room to run and exercise. Siberian Huskies are friendly dogs that lack the guard dogs hostility and often will approach other dogs and people and treat them very kindly.
