Shadow Of Darkness Essay, Research Paper
Title: studentCategory: Personal EssayDescription:Body of paper: Shadow of Darkness It was several hours before dawn. Large spotlights were giving off radiant light that was exposing a nasty filth ridden wasteland. Minute insects were hovering around the light which was reflecting on to an orange bulldozer. The dozer had the words John Deere etched in to the bulldozer s side. Smelly odors rose from the massive landfill, while miniature, gray scavengers scurried in front of the bulldozer. The bulldozer operator, balled deep inside thick layers of clothing, looked like he belonged in the heap of dirt where he worked: long johns, a flannel shirt, and a bulky orange hunting jacket was all that kept his body warm. A hat pulled over his ears and skiers goggles protected his face. Twisting the dozer in place, he lowered it and attacked a new mound of slimy waste. He had almost totally gotten rid of the filth. He yanked the control back, wiped off his goggles, and leaned forward. The trash which was moved by the operator revealed a figure underneath the prow of the dozer. The man saw a skeletal head with traces of long blond hair and eyeless sockets which was propped up against a visible rib. The operator took another peek at the woman, and then immediately ripped off his goggles. He leaped clumsily from the dozer and landed head first in the waste. He could not see two inches in front of him before the waste blocked his line of vision. As he moved around in unrewarding attempts to poke his head above the garbage he felt something against his arm. He managed to rise above the filth and realize that what his arm had felt was the woman with the eyeless sockets. A wretched screech came from the man s mouth. It echoed in to the desolate silence of the chilly early morning wind. He stumbled to his feet and looked around for the office that was simply a trailer with two windows with half open shutters. In a state of mass panicking the man ran toward the office still screaming.Tripping and stumbling along the way the man finally made it to the office. He banged open the frail door and threw it off it s hinges. With a look of trepidation on the man s face he tried to explain what he saw. The lady must not have understood him or even cared what he said because she said ssssshhhhh. Then she put her pointer finger in the air and motioned for him to hold on. The man panicked and went ballistic at the same time because he started to flail his arms around in the air and scream THERE HAS BEEN A WOMAN BRUTALLY MURDERED IN THE LANDFILL! NOW ARE YOU GONNA HANG UP THAT STUPID PHONE OR AM I GONNA COME BACK THERE AND HANG IT UP FOR YOU!!! With in half a seconds time the woman hung up the phone and focused all of the attention she had at that moment on the dozer operator. The operator explained what had occurred just 5 minutes prior as best he could. The woman was also panicking at this time. She could barely hold the phone, much less even dial the correct numbers in order to notify the police of what happened. After a second and then a third attempt of reaching the police, the woman was successful. In the time between the lady reaching the police and the time the police would arrive the man and the woman had no clue how to occupy their time. They both felt as if merely waiting for the police without doing anything would be counter productive. The man began to look around the room. There were three desks all of which were huge wrecks and in no way were they organized. One of the desks was directly in front of the door and is where the woman was sitting. The name plaque in the front of her desk read Ann Bates. She was frozen and now babbling some insignificant childish words to herself. Directly on each side of the man sat the other two desks. Within a moments notice the operator snapped out of his daze and and began frantically searching for any information that would lead to where the dead woman may have come from. He tossed the papers around only making it harder for him or the police to find any information. Blank pieces of paper, written on pieces of paper, and crumbled pieces of paper were being tossed up in to the air and swirling down in miniature circles. Ann grabbed the man and jerked him wildly. In a stern voice she demanded that the operator to get a hold of his self. The man was in shock. I think this is when the man began to realize what he had witnessed. Again he let out another blood curling scream and began to panic once more. By now the woman had shaken him so much that he began to sweat. His face got apple red; he ripped off his coat and sat down against the wall. When his rear hit the floor it made a thump, he was a hefty man. He began to cry and bang his head against the wall making thumps every time he did and yell out all the things that he thought might happen to him.
He screamed What if the cops think I did it. Then I am dead. I have a wife and a new baby on the way. Me and Marie don t got no money or a lawyer. What am I gonna do!! I am going to go insane if the cops lock me up. What am I gonna do!!!! Ann walked over to the man and punched him so hard it broke his nose. From the side the outline of his nose, it looked like a crooked paper clip. Blood began to inch its way from the man s nose to his lip. Ann said What about me. I don t have any money coming in to my house unless it s my 3.50 an hour that the stupid boss pays us. At least you got someone who wants you and will be worrying about you if you go to jail. I don t!!!! By this time both were exasperated and now Ann sat up against the wall near the dozer operator. In the muffled background of noises of cars being honked or the heavy rain that began to pour, Ann and the man could hear sirens from a police car. The sounds grew stronger and stronger as the pitch of the sirens fluctuated from a low pitch to a high one, then back to a low one once again. Ann and the man rose to their feet in a hurry and ran toward the open door that was allowing rain in due to the downpour that once drizzle had evolved in to. Ann scurried toward the police that had just turned into the long dirt driveway of the junkyard. Mud flew everywhere and Ann was pointing toward the field. The operator ran toward the dead woman. Slipping and falling along the way the police ran after the man one hand on their belts and the other gripping their flashlight. As the man approached the body he turned around and yelled Right here, the woman is right here. Neither of the officers were anywhere to be found. The operator twisted and turned his body as he searched for the police officers. He ran a few feet back where the policeman were last seen by the operator. They were still no where to be found. A sudden surge of light busted out upon the operator. He looked up and saw that the dozer lights were on. Immediately he put his hands up in to the air between his eyes and the light. The engine cranked up and made a loud roar as the chain on the engine began to turn. Still unable to see a thing the operator yelled out Who’s there? The yelp from the operator was immediately blocked out in to the background of noises produced by the rain and the operator. Who s there? Still no response. The operator lifted his obese body from the ground up toward the drivers seat of his craft.Once again the terror which had covered his face while witnessing the slaughtered woman, covered his face. He saw the two policeman dead and motionless. He examined the two bodies and instead screaming or running a puzzling look came about his face. A fuse suddenly broke on a power line and all the lights shorted out in the landfill. All that lit the wasteland were the two lights that beamed out from the bulldozer. An odd feeling abruptly came about the man, and he suddenly turned around. He saw Ann. The man, with a confused look on his face, said Ann?. Did you see what happened to these offers.? The man looked down, and away from Ann. He began to ponder. Then he realized that Ann was the killer. He turned around once again, and this time Ann had a gun pointed on the man s head. Bang!! Bang!! The bullets were unleashed. The bullets penetrated the skin and Ann fell silently to the ground. The man stood quiet for a moment, and then fell to the ground. The second shot had struck him, and he was now dead. This paper was written by Brad Campbell and they can be reached at bsoup@mindspring.
