Образованная в 1967 году в западногерманском городе Мюнхене музыкальная коммуна объединяла тринадцать человек, в числе которых были бывший джазовый музыкант Крис Каррер, Ули и Петер Леопольд (р. 15 августа 1945), Хельга и Анжелика Филянда, Элла и Райнер Бауэры. Взяв название "Amon Duul", составленное из имени египетского бога солнца и турецкого литературного персонажа, члены коммуны начали изучать музыкальные инструменты с тем, чтобы воплотить разработанную ими идею концертов с участием представителей различных видов исполнительского искусства. Все они находились тогда под впечатлением от новой англо-американской психоделической музыки типа "Hapshash & The colored coat". Быстро завоевав репутацию андеграундной группы, уже осенью 1968 года они выступили на музыкальном фестивале в Эссене, прошедшем в зале "Gruga-Halle". К тому времени коммуна развалилась на две части – "Amon Duul" и "Amon Duul II". Разделить названия таким образом предложил барабанщик Петер Леопольд.
Объединившиеся с "Коммуной номер 1" австриец Райнер Бауэр и один из братьев Леопольдов - Ульрих - стояли за продолжение работы в духе деструктурированного психоделического рока с ориентацией на политические тексты, тогда как Крис Каррер со своими соратниками стоял за более сложную музыку, отталкивавшуюся от спейс-рока. "Amon Duul" подписали контракт с фирмой "Metronome Records" и выпустили два альбома: "Amon Duul I", более известный под названием "Psychedelic Underground", и "Collapsing: Singvogel Ruckwarts & Co", распространявшиеся только в Германии. Они были выполнены в традициях фри-джаза с подавляющим роковым ритмом, став предвестником хаоса и энергии, позднее получивших развитие во время нашествия панка.
В 1984 году увидел свет альбом "Experimente", представлявший собой двадцать четыре трека, записанные коллективом в опять же в 1969-м в результате экспериментирования со студийным оборудованием. Позднейший состав группы включал в себя Райнера и Эллу Бауэров, Ули Леопольда, Клауса Эссера (гитара, бас, ударные), Хельги и Анжелики Филянда. В ноябре-декабре 1970 года при содействии Ханси Фишер (флейта, бонги), Джона Вайнцирля и Шрата из "Amon Duul II" они записали еще один англоязычный альбом – "Paradieswartz Duul" - и сингл "Eternal Flow"/"Paramechanical World". В создании пластинок также участвовали Усхи Обермайер (маракасы) и Карлхайнц Хаусманн. Здесь уже звучал более расслабленный, хотя и необычный рок с вкраплением фолка, с акцентом на многочисленные гитары и включающий единственные в своем роде длинные импровизационные фрагменты. Участники ансамбля "гостили" на выполненной в схожей стилистике композиции "Sandoz In The Rain" с альбома "Yeti" группы "Amon Duul II".
Однако жизнь коллектива оказалась недолгой. В силу музыкальных и личных разногласий в 1971 году "Amon Duul" распались. Их последний альбом с добавлением композиций сингла в качестве бонуса был переиздан в 1995-м.
