Damned
"The Damned" появились на свет в 1976 году из культовой британской команды "London SS", в которой также играли будущий гитарист " Clash" Мик Джонс и будущий басист "Generation X" Тони Джеймс. Хотя среди английских панк-групп они многое сделали первыми (первыми выпустили сингл, первыми издали альбом, первыми посетили Америку и первыми…первый раз распались), но так и остались недооцененными по сравнению со своими коллегами по цеху " Sex pistols" и " Clash". В изначальный состав банды вошли Кэптэн Сэнсибл (Рэй Бернс, р. 23 апреля 1955, бас), Брайан Джеймс (р. 18 февраля 1955, гитара), Дэйв Вэниан (р. 12 октября 1956, вокал) и Рэт Скэбиз (Крис Миллер, р. 30 июля 1957, ударные). После заключения контракта со "Stiff records" был скоропалительно записан сингл "New rose", а вслед за ним и дебютный альбом, "Damned damned damned".
На создание пластинки ушло всего пара дней и неудивительно, что ее саунд оказался сырым и непричесанным. Последующие британский тур вместе с " Pistols", " Clash" и американские гастроли в компании с "Flamin' Groovies" прошли довольно быстро и сопровождались вереницей скандалов.
Незадолго до сессий второго альбома Джеймсу стукнуло в голову, что группе нужен второй гитарист. Сэнсиблу и Скэбизу эта идея не очень понравилась, но после прослушивания 40 человек они согласились с тем, что надо взять Роберта Эдмунса, который стойко прошел все испытания, которые устроили ему парни. За продюсирование "Music for pleasue" взялся барабанщик " Pink Floyd" Ник Мэйсон. Пластинка принесла "The Damned" разочарование, несмотря на то, что пара песен с нее попала в чарты. Повальное пьянство и злоупотребление наркотиками не могло не сказаться на взаимоотношениях в коллективе. В результате вспыхнувших разборок первым хлопнул дверью Скэбиз, замененный Джоном Моссом. Но прошло не так уж много времени, как о своем уходе заявил Брайан, и группа фактически развалилась.
Однако через полгода "Damned" были реанимированы, правда, без Джеймса, но зато со Скэбизом. Сэнсибл переключился на гитару, а новым басистом стал Элджи Уорд. Записанный этой конфигурацией альбом "Machine gun etiquette" стал, пожалуй, лучшей работой коллектива, а две композиции, "Smash it up" и "I just can't be happy today", вошли в лучшую десятку. На следующем диске "Damned" отошли от чистого панка и начали заигрывать с другими стилями. Роль басиста на "The black album" исполнял Пол Грей, сменивший ушедшего в "Tank" Уорда. Слушатели не оценили экспериментов группы, и продажи пластинки оказались неутешительными. Следующий релиз, "Strawberries", состоящий большей частью из поп-композиций был издан еще меньшим тиражом.
В попытке вернуть популярность команда сменила лейбл и добавила в состав клавишника Романа Джагга, но это "Проклятым" не помогло. Зато неожиданно успех пришел к Сэнсиблу, выпустившего сольник с китовой песенкой "Happy talk". Сей факт привел к новым раздорам в группе, и в середине 80-х Кэптэн ушел от своих коллег. Однако "Damned" удалось оправиться от этого удара, и с Джаггом в роли гитариста они записали удачный альбом "Phantasmagoria", занявший 11-е место в чартах. Наивысшим же достижением группы стал сингл "Eloise", добравшийся до второй строчки хит-парадов. Лейбл, решив, что надо ковать бабки, пока горячо, срочно запихал музыкантов обратно в студию. В результате этого необдуманного шага на свет появилось худшее творение банды – "Anything". Пластинка потерпела полный провал, "MCA" расторгла контракт и группа оказалась не у дел.
Очередной камбэк "Damned" состоялся во второй половине 90-х, без Рэта, но с Сэнсиблом и подружкой вокалиста Патрисией Моррисон на басу. Но на них никто особого внимания не обращал вплоть до 2001 года, когда Декстер Холланд из " Offsping" предложил "Проклятым" выпустить альбом на своем лейбле, чем музыканты не замедлили воспользоваться, представив на суд слушателей "Grave disorder".
