Aunque las obras de Miguel de Unamuno tienen muchos temas
importantes, como el conflicto de personajes, el demonio interior, y la perdida de
fe, un tema tan importante de sus obras es el de la mortalidad. Todas las
personajes de estas obras piensan y reactan de la mortalidad en maneras
diferentes. Este ensayo explicara como dos personajes importantes de las obras
de Unamuno confrontan su mortalidad: Don Manuel en San Manuel Bueno,
Martir, y Joaquin Monegro en Abel Sanchez.
Don Manuel, la personaje titular de San Manuel Bueno, Martir, tiene que
confrontar la inmortalidad en una manera extrana porque actua como padre a
pesar del facto que realmente no es creyente. En realidad, Don Manuel no es
seguro si cree en Dios y la religion o no. Asi, Don Manuel probablamente ve la
mortalidad y la muerte como un acontecimiento regular: que una persona
simplemente muere y es el fin. El no cree en la inmortalidad si mismo, pero Don
Manuel finge que creer asi las personas del pueblo creen. Don Manuel dice que
“Es importante creer en algo, no importa en que cree.” Don Manuel piensa que si
el finge a creer en la inmortalidad, entonces la gente creera tambien, y sentiendo
que la vida vale la pena, tratara de vivir sus vidas como cristianos buenos. Si
una persona cree en la inmortalidad y la posibilidad de vivir despues de la
muerte, entonces va a vivir una vida buena, haciendo hechos buenos y
ayudando a otros, porque cree que el Dios vera estas acciones y la escogera para
tener una existencia inmortal. La creencia en la inmortalidad siempre habia sido
y continuara ser un fuente de inspiracion y esperanza para los cristianos. Don
Manuel se aprovecha de esta informacion para ayudar a la gente creer, aunque el
mismo no cree. Es un ejemplo de una persona usando el idea de la mortalidad
con intenciones buenas.
Joaquin Monegro, en cambio, es diferente en dos maneras en respecto al
Don Manuel y la mortalidad. Primero, Joaquin tiene una creencia fuerte en la
inmortalidad, y segundo, el usa esta creencia para hacer y pensar en hechos
malos. Unamuno no nos dice si Joaquin cree en la inmortalidad literal, pero si
nos dice que el cree la inmortalidad figurativa: siempre quiere que ser
recordado por las personas del futuro. Su ocupacion como doctor es un senal de
su deseo de conquistar la mortalidad por salvar las vidas de su pacientes.
Joaquin estudia y trabaja mucho porque cree que si el es el gran doctor del
mundo, siempre sera recordado. Cuando ve Joaquin las pinturas de su hermano
Abel, que captura la imagen de las personas para siempre, Joaquin se enfada y se
hace tan celoso. Se da cuenta que aunque quizas ha salvado la vida de un
paciente, eventualmente la paciente, como todos humanos, va a morir, mientras
las pinturas de Abel vivira para la eternidad en los muros y paredes de el
pueblo. Como resultado, Joaquin trata de arruinar la felicidad de la vida de
Abel y usa Abel y su exito como la excusa para todos sus problemas. Al fin, la
envidia es tan fuerte que estrangula a su hermano.
He presentado dos personajes de las obras de Unamuno que tiene en
comun el problema de la mortalidad, pero diferencia en como ve la mortalidad y
como decidir a tratar con ella.
