The Dissatisfaction of Georgiana
In the story A Wagner Matinee, by Willa Cather, a short story by Willa Cather, an elderly old woman named Aunt Georgiana is dissatisfied with her life because she is completely isolated from the rest of the world because of her small prairie farm in the Midwest as well as the tremendous amount of work which is expected of her. For the past years, all she has done is work on her farm. Everyday, she is expected to feed everyone on the farm, as well as the farmhands; three times a day. Along with that, she must mend all of the clothing and clean the household. She even has to help with the harvesting at times. At the beginning of the concert which her nephew Clark takes her to in Boston, she is startled and awakened by the, . singing of basses and stinging frenzy of lighter strings [which] broke a silence of thirty years, (484). And because she hasn t seen the outside world for so long, when she finally must go home after the concert, she is quoted as saying (486), I don t want to go, Clark, I don t want to go! The effects of such dissatisfaction are that she has skin that is wrinkled and yellowed, her cuticles are basically leather, and her mind is a wandering mess. However, as Clark mentions, her most obvious impediment is, an incessant twitching of the mouth and eyebrows, (482). He states just after this that it is caused by her isolation and her perils of physical pain (482). When all of this information is compiled, it could be said that she has endured a harsh life of isolation, hard work, and dissatisfaction with it. By: the PimpShit
