Ben Carson was a hero because he overcame great problems. He was poor, he had no dad at home, his mother worked two jobs, and Ben did not do well in elementary school. It seemed like Ben would be poor his whole life. Ben?s mother made him believe that he would be great. Ben and his brother worked very hard at school. Ben became a great doctor. Ben helped many people get well. Ben helped many people believe that they could do great things.
Ben is special because he was raised in a very poor place in Detroit where many people never learn anything. Ben is special because he had to work very hard. Ben was different than many people he grew up with because he believed what his Mom told him. Ben is famous because he is a great doctor.
Ben was the worst student in his fifth grade class. Most of the other children made fun of him. They laughed at his grades. Ben thought he was dumb and could never learn. His Mom told him he would be great. His Mom told him that he had to work hard. His Mom told him he could always do better than he thought that he could do. His Mom worked very hard for Ben. His Mom wanted him to work very hard for her.
When Ben was making bad grades in school, his Mom would let him watch only three TV shows a week. His Mom also made him read two books a week and write book reports for her. Ben did not like this at first. Ben began to like to read. Ben began doing better in school. Ben liked making good grades.
Ben had a real bad temper. He got into fights and tried to stab his best friend. This scared Ben. Ben prayed that God would help him lose his temper. Ben believed God would help him. After this prayer Ben knew he would never lose his temper again. Ben had faith and self control.
I would ask Ben how he knew that God could help him lose his temper. I would ask him this because it had to be hard for him to lose his temper since so many people teased him and laughed at him. I would ask him this because it helped him become a great person.
