Сменивший вскоре вывеску на "Destruction" коллектив включал в себя Марка Ширмера (бас, вокал), гитариста Майкла Сиффрингера и ударника Томаса Сенманна. Первой записью группы стала демка "Bestial Invasion", включавшая в себя трек "Mad Butcher". Эта композиция стала настолько популярной, что дала название мини-альбому, появившемуся в 1987 году. Кстати, этот релиз стал первой записью, в которой участвовал второй гитарист Харолд Вилкенс. К тому времени также Сенманна, решившего завязать с музыкой и подавшегося в полицейские, сменил барабанщик Оливер Кайзер.
С выходом "Mad Butcher" популярность "Destruction" перешагнула пределы родной Германии и группа отправилась в европейское турне в компании с " Motorhead". Выступления германских трэшевиков прошли довольно успешно, и тогда ребята решили попробовать свои силы в Америке, где они отыграли несколько дат на разогреве у " Slayer".
Однако настоящую мировую известность группа получила с выходом альбома "Release From Agony". В 1989 году состоялись британские гастроли, где "Destruction" помогали "Celtic frost" раскручивать свой альбом. На следующий год в команде начались разборки, в результате которых Ширмеру пришлось уйти из группы. Сначала он хотел присоединиться к "Paganini", но кончилось тем, что он возглавил новый проект "Headhunter". Место Марка в "Destruction" занял бывший вокалист "Poltergeist" Андре, при участии которого и был записан альбом "Cracked brian". Диск оказался значительно слабее своих предшественников, удачной была лишь интерпретация "My Sharonna" группы "The knacks".
Команда оказалась практически на грани развала. В 1991-м была предпринята попытка поработать с новым вокалистом Флеммингом Ронсдорфом (экс-"Artillery"), но эта конфигурация просуществовала всего лишь пару недель.
Только в 1999 году Ширмер и Сиффрингер смогли наконец-то уладить свои разногласия и возрожденный "Destruction" при участии новенького барабанщика Свена Ворманна с успехом прокатился по европейским фестивалям. Заключив контракт с "Nuclear Blast", группа с продюсером Питером Тогтгреном записала альбом "All Hell Breaks Loose". Как бы продолжение прошлого и ответ на знаменитую "Mad Butcher" на диске присутствовала композиция "The Butcher Strikes Back". Пластинка хорошо продавалась и заняла 67-ю позицию в национальных германских чартах. После ее выхода "Destruction" приняли участие в фестивале, организованном их лейблом "Nuclear Blast Festival" в компании с такими коллективами как " Crematory", "Kataklyzm", "Raise hell". В октябре 2001 года группу покинул ударник Свен Ворманн, а на его место был принят Марк Рейн.
При его участии команда совершила глобальное германское турне в компании со своими соотечественниками "Sodom" и " Kreator". Особенно успешным получился концертный альянс с " Kreator", поэтому на следующий год был запланирован визит этих двух команд в Южную Америку.
