Введение
Рейс 11 American Airlines был первым авиалайнером, захваченным в процессе совершения терактов 11 сентября 2001 года. Лайнер авиакомпании American Airlines Boeing 767-223ER, хвостовой номер N334AA[1], выполнял регулярный коммерческий рейс из бостонского аэропорта Логан в международный аэропорт Лос-Анджелеса. 11 сентября 2001 года, авиалайнер был захвачен в полете, и врезался в северную башню Всемирного торгового центра в Нью-Йорке в 8:46 (по местному времени). 1. Угонщики
На борту самолета находилось пять угонщиков:[2]

Четверо из угонщиков были выбраны компьютеризированной системой досмотра пассажиров CAPPS для дополнительного досмотра багажа на предмет выявления взрывчатых веществ. Багаж Мохаммеда Атты был проверен еще в Портланде, а багаж Аль-Сугуми, Аль-Шехри и Аль-Шери был выбран для проверки в Бостоне. Все, кроме Валида (который не имел никакого багажа), просто предоставили свой багаж для дополнительной проверки. Выбор системы CAPPS не стал причиной для каких-либо дополнительных проверок самих угонщиков[3].
2. Полет
Вылет рейса был запланирован на 7:45[4], но посадка задержалась. В спешке багаж Мохаммеда Атты не был погружен на борт рейса 11[5]. Самолет отправился от гейта 26[6] и в 7:59, с 14 минутной задержкой, взлетел с полосы 4R международного аэропорта Логан[7]. В 8:13:29, в тот момент когда авиалайнер находился на высоте около 8000 метров (26 000 футов, FL260) над центральным Массачусетсом, пилот получил указание Бостонского центра управления воздушным движением совершить поворот на 20° вправо[7]. В 8:13:47 Бостонский центр дал указание рейсу 11 набрать высоту 10 600 метров (35 000 футов, FL350). Рейс 11 не подтвердил прием инструкций[7]. В 8:16 авиалайнер прекратил набор высоты на высоте около 8900 метров (29000, FL290)[7].
2.1. Захват
Комиссия 9/11 установила, что захват самолета начался в 8:14[8]. До этого момента авиалайнер находился под управлением капитана Джона Огоновски и второго пилота Томаса Макгиннеса, через небольшое время после захвата самолет стал отклоняться от своего маршрута. Бостонский центр предпринял множество попыток связаться с рейсом 11, но не получил от него никакого ответа[8]. В 8:21 ответчик самолета был выключен[7].
В 8:23:38 Атта попытался привлечь внимание пассажиров, но перепутал кнопки и отправил свое сообщение Бостонскому центру[9]. 2.2. Телефонные звонки

3. Катастрофа

Французский кинематографист Жюль Ноде и чешский иммигрант Павел Хлава, независимо друг от друга случайно засняли на видео, как рейс 11 врезался в северную башню[16]. Веб-камера, установленная Вольфгангом Сталом на выставке в Бруклине, и делающая один кадр в четыре секунды, также запечатлела это событие[17].
3.1. Жертвы
Разрушения, вызванные ударом самолета, перекрыли все пути эвакуации из пораженной зоны здания. Все лестницы и лифтовые шахты были разрушены (в отличие от южной башни, в которую самолет попал под углом, и где продолжала действовать одна лестница). 1366 человек погибло на этажах в районе и выше зоны попадания самолета. По данным Комиссии 9/11 сотни погибли непосредственно в момент удара[18], остальные, оказавшиеся запертыми на верхних этажах, погибли от огня и дыма, или в момент разрушения здания. 4. Реакция NORAD
Бостонский Центр Федеральной Авиационной Администрации (FAA) отвечал за отслеживание и руководство полетом рейса 11 непосредственно от момента его взлета в аэропорту Логан. После многочисленных неудачных попыток установить связь с самолетом, а особенно после получения сообщения "у нас несколько самолетов", авиадиспетчер решил, что самолет захвачен. Он уведомил надзирателя, который, в свою очередь, сообщил руководству, что захваченный самолет направляется в зону ответственности Нью-Йоркского Центра. В 8:32, командный центр FAA в Херндоне, сообщил о захваченном самолете в штаб-квартиру FAA[8].
В 8:37:52 Бостонский Центр связался, в обход протоколов, с Северо-Восточным Сектором (NEADS) Командования ПВО Североамериканского Континента (NORAD)в городе Рим, штат Нью-Йорк[8]. NEADS вызывает два истребителя F-15 с воздушной базы Отис, для того, чтобы перехватить рейс 11. Истребители взлетают с аэродрома авиабазы Отис в 8:46.[8]. В это время, рейс 11 уже врезался в северную башню ВТЦ.
Поскольку транспондер рейса 11 был отключен, пилоты истребителей не имели представления о направлении, в котором им нужно двигаться для перехвата. Несколько минут в NEADS потратили на ожидание, что рейс 11 появится на их радарах. NORAD получило предупреждение об угоне лайнера за девять минут до катастрофы, это было самое раннее предупреждение в этот день[19].
5. Современный рейс
Номер рейса был изменен авиакомпанией, и теперь по этому маршруту и в это же время летает рейс 25 (Boeing 757). Над гейтом, от которого отправился в свой последний полет рейс 11, установлен американский флаг[20].
